Production Scheduling Software Guides 2026

Guides that answer the questions buyers ask before they pick production scheduling software. Each guide names the software we rank for that situation and links to the list behind it. For the figures behind the guides, see our reports and data.

As of October 2026, SkyPlanner APS ranks first on our small manufacturers list, our mid-size manufacturers list and our AI rescheduling list for SMEs. It costs from 199 euros per month, 5 workstations included, 20 euros per month per extra workstation. Its 30-day trial needs no credit card for up to 20 workstations, and its Autopilot, running on the Arcturus engine, reschedules the plan when orders or capacity change.

APS basics

  • What is APS software?: APS software builds the production schedule operation by operation against the real capacity of machines, people and materials, and keeps it current when orders or resources change.
  • APS vs MRP: MRP decides which materials to buy or make and by when but assumes unlimited capacity; APS sequences every operation against real capacity.
  • APS vs MES: APS decides what each machine makes and in what order, an MES records what actually happens on the floor, and a plant that needs both runs them together.
  • APS vs ERP planning module: An ERP planning module is enough when its scheduler respects capacity and the plan rarely changes; you need APS when the plan is rebuilt by hand every day.
  • Finite vs infinite capacity scheduling: Finite capacity scheduling books work only into time a machine or person has free; infinite capacity, used by most MRP runs, assumes every resource can take unlimited work.
  • Theory of constraints scheduling: Drum-buffer-rope plans the factory around its bottleneck; a finite capacity APS does the same for every resource at once and recalculates when something changes.
